Bortezomib is a cancer chemotherapy drug used to treat certain types of tumors (e.g., multiple myeloma). It blocks certain proteins which help to slow the growth and spread of cancer.
Bortezomib Injection Side Effects:
Along with its needed effects, a drug may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur:
• Black, tarry stools
• bleeding gums
• blood in the urine or stools
• blurred vision
• body aches or pain
• burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, "pins and needles", or tingling feelings
• chest pain
• chills
• confusion
• cough
• cough producing mucus
• decreased urination
• difficult or labored breathing
• dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position
• dry mouth
• ear congestion
Bortezomib Injection Precautions:
• Before starting bortezomib treatment, make sure you tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking (including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, herbal remedies, etc.). Do not take aspirin, or products containing aspirin unless your doctor specifically permits this.
• Do not receive any kind of immunization or vaccination without your doctor's approval while taking bortezomib.
• Inform your health care professional if you are pregnant or may be pregnant prior to starting this treatment. Pregnancy category D (bortezomib may be hazardous to the fetus. Women who are pregnant or become pregnant must be advised of the potential hazard to the fetus.)
• For both men and women: Do not conceive a child (get pregnant) while taking bortezomib. Barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms, are recommended. Discuss with your doctor when you may safely become pregnant or conceive a child after therapy.
• Do not breastfeed while taking this medication.
